Success for the Maple in the Square

Plymouth Tree People are delighted to announce that our fundraiser to remove some tarmac from around the maple in Sir John Hawkins Square was successful, and the work has now been carried out!

We want to say a huge thank you to the 61 people who donated to the fundraiser. We actually broke through our target and the total raised was £1,650, which means we have enough left over to water the tree and maybe carry out a few more improvements in the square.

Glendale were contracted to carry out the work, which they did this week and they did a fantastic job. Once they had started we discovered that the tarmac was in fact over 3 inches deep. This made finishing it with the granite setts a bit more challenging so the work went into a second day.

It was decided that the spacings of the setts be slightly random, so any large surface roots could be bridged by concrete rather than severed to incorporate the setts which were quite thick.

Following completion of the project, our social media posts about the project were by far and away the busiest we have ever had with thousands of likes and hundreds of comments, all saying how much better they thought it looked and how pleased they were that we had done it.

It was also featured in Plymouth Live, which you can read here.

We would also like to say a big thank you to the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership for working with us to get permission from Plymouth City Council, which was essential and all their offers of help.
